HYPNEROTOMACHIA PHILOSOPHY MAJOR WSCD047 "The Human heart is the ordnance of Murder - blood, blood, blood. Light and sound drain out of the world like befouled water, and a deep, black, expectant silence flowers in their absence. It is in joyful anticipation of a sunless Eden that my heart cries." "Hypnerotomachia" - The Strife of Love in a Dream So begins Francesco Colonna's (thought to be the pen name of the infamous Baron de Rais) forbidden alchemical text of love and horror. So too begins Philosophy Major's own quest to discover the form in which to express the psychic explosion of Colonna's murderous flowers of love. With this release, Philosophy Major, who has produced tracks for Illegal Art and Arable Farmland, collaborated with New York art-rockers, Rasputina, co-founded Seattle's LoveCraft Technologies Inc., co-written and co-produced (with Dub Maestro Prince Charming) Fantastic Voyage (WSCD029), and studied improvisation with jazz legend Yusef Lateef, bends his energies to the indoctrination of the uninitiated into the mysteries of the new-alchemy and Black Ark orchestration. Produced with Prince Charming, Hypnerotomachia (hypn-eroto-machia) is Philosophy Major's answer to the subtly warped mirrors of prefabricated romance and politically-mandated homicide with which every modern man, woman and child are surrounded. Building upon a solid foundation of dub groove-science, weaving samples culled from 78s and archival wax cylinders with some of the heaviest drum-machine mayhem since Big Black's Earth Atomizer, and punctuated throughout with analog explosions of pure, sorcerous sound, Hypnerotomachia is a monument to the creative power of dissolution. Now the hour has arrived; turn out the lights and slip on the headphones. The key to the invocation is in your hands; the laboratorium is your mind. In front of you, trapdoors beneath millennially shunned mansions open upon underground vaults revealing the clandestine retreats of abhorred erudition. Footsteps from outside, from the fathomless worlds beyond the stars are echoing in your ears. Abstruse machinery is set in motion; unhallowed rituals commence. Dowsed with microwaves, aurifying Crucibles catch fire and explode in brilliant novae of unnamable color, while all fixed and wandering stars recede into the conspiratorial Cymmerian Darkness. "In attempting to musically illustrate one of the great underground classics of forbidden science, Philosophy Major may very well have created the soundtrack to insurrection." - Skiz André Breton Mare Tranquilitatis, 16 July 1969 Expand your mind with the teachings of Philosphy Major WordSound saga continues... |
